Tennessee unveiled their online and mobile sports betting industryon November 1, 2020, nearly 18 months after the pastime became legal. The law only allows for internet and mobile sports betting platforms, meaning no land-based locations are available as they are not specified as such within the law. Four sportsbook operators launched on the official date with more to come in the future. Retail sportsbooks in Illinois will pay 5% of their gross gaming revenue as a licensing fee, with the maximum allowable fee being $10 million. SB 690 also allows Illinois to issue three online-only sports betting licenses, which will cost $20 million each.

Another major chunk goes to technology provider IGT, which has an unusually-close relationship with the state government and the two casinos in the state. In theory, Colorado could be home to 33 separate online and retail sportsbooks. However, given some of the overlap with casinos owned by the same company and the potential for oversaturating the market, it’s unlikely that there will be so many. Lottery officials moved forward without passage of any new legislation in the state. Because of the state’s prior exemption under PASPA, the lottery claimed that it had the authority to launch sports betting without needing any further authorization. Online sports betting is legal, at least according to regulators in the state.

FanDuel has since launched online sports betting apps in several states including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Colorado, West Virginia and Indiana. Unlike in-house sign-up, states that offer true online sports betting won’t force players to visit a live book to sign up and load their accounts. Instead, they can usually do so from just about anywhere (real-money wagers are still restricted to within state lines).

Rhode Island sports betting took most of the nation by surprise, with the state becoming the eighth state to start accepting sports bets. Only two casinos can hold sports betting licenses in the state – Twin River Casino and Twin River Tiverton Casino. The law to legalize sports betting was passed on June 22, 2018, as part of the governor’s budget package.

Montana was one of the few states where PASPA didn’t restrict sports betting. Running sports betting in bars and taverns, albeit via a lottery system and not a sportsbook, remained legal. DraftKings has a firm grip on sports betting in New Hampshire, although the state Lottery intends to offer a sports betting option. We also expect multiple retail sports betting facilities to open in the future.

Pennsylvania passed legal sports betting, including mobile betting on November 16, 2018. They would start to let sportsbooks go live in May of 2019, as they began to test the product. Pennsylvania now operates at full capacity with several physical and online sportsbooks for all your wager needs.
